Community Capacity Building Project in Niassa Province

Mozambique

This project is a small but important component of our AFAP-APAC Program and is implemented by our partner, Concern Universal, in the two districts of Sanga and Muembe in Niassa Province. Concern Universal implements its programs mainly through partners. Currently, Concern Universal has four implementing partners in its AFAP-APAC program.

Concern Universal has implemented the AFAP-APAC Program to support and strengthen the quality (value-adding) of its existing HIV and AIDS activities, which are being implemented in its existing impact areas. APAC interventions focus on prevention of HIV infection through information dissemination and mitigation of the impacts of AIDS on the community and affected households (material support to households taking care of OVC). Key HIV prevention activities have been the provision of information, education and communication, HIV and AIDS training of community HIV and AIDS activists, formation of ‘Stepping Stones’ groups, adult literacy education and training of traditional leaders, healers and matrons.

To mitigate the impact of AIDS at household level, the program has established a system for community based registration of orphans and provides educational and material support to orphans and other vulnerable children. The program has mobilised and trained 72 community-based activists that facilitate activities at community level.
