Country Overview
Political turmoil in recent years has seen much of Zimbabwe’s economic and social infrastructure crumble, with unemployment at over 80% and the prevalence of HIV/AIDS at over 15%.
Zimbabwe’s struggling economy has been further undermined by prolonged drought and the World Food Programme has estimated that more than 5 million vulnerable people, mostly in rural areas currently require food aid. Recent changes in the political situation have led to some cautious optimism for the future.
***************
Home of Victoria Falls - one of the natural wonders of the world - Zimbabwe was once a thriving country and a major producer of tobacco and food crops for export. In recent years, political and economic instability, combined with the effects of serious drought, have led to a drop in living standards for many residents.
AFAP is working with Community Technology Development Trust on environmental and livelihoods projects to reduce the country’s vulnerability to natural disasters and to improve the lives of its residents.
