Medical Supplies and Services (MSS)

AFAP Medical Supplies and Services (MSS) has worked in several developing countries since 16 years

with the aim to support educational and health sector through the provision of equipment.

In May 2007 the Australian Foundation for Peoples of Asia and the Pacific (AFAP) funded “The North Malaita Medical Supply Enhancement Project 2007” in Solomon Islands.

North Malaita region: a brief background

In the North Malaita region of the Solomon Islands, like elsewhere, access to better health facilities is a basic human right for individuals

and is of uttermost importance to the livelihood of rural communities.

However, due to lack of resources and unequal distribution of development benefits access to standard medical facilities is not fully realized

in most of the clinics in North Malaita.

Considerable population growth along with over-crowdedness of evicted North Malaita people from Guadalcanal immediately after the tension

in Solomon Islands has resulted in the unavailability of adequate medical items and facilities to cater for the rising demand for basic health services.

AFAP project: what we did

The project was successfully implemented within seven recipient rural clinics and was tagged by many North Malaita people living in Honiara, overseas and in the rural communities as most successful and crucial in the development of health services in that region.

The medical supplies were packed by staff and volunteers at the AFAP warehouse office in Sydney, Australia and loaded into a container to be shipped to Honiara. Equipment and supplies included wheelchairs for children, birthing kits, needles and syringes among others.

AFAP project: the benefits

Programs like the AFAP’s MSS would greatly improve the medical services provided to rural communities at all the clinics at a cheaper cost, enabling poor people to save some money for other needs.
