AFAP Programs

Africa

In Africa much of our work is focussed on integrated rural development initiatives in an effort to address the complexities that contribute to poverty in this region.  In Africa we work with communities to develop initiatives that meet their needs in order to maximise the likelihood that our interventions will be successful.  While our programs are aimed at supporting whole communities, particular attention is paid to the more marginalised or vulnerable groups within these communities, including people with disabilities, women, children and those who are suffering from chronic illnesses like HIV and AIDS.  Our current program is working on increasing food security, improving access to safe water and sanitation and on building the capacity of health services particularly those related to Child and Maternal Health and HIV and AIDS issues.

Pacific

AFAP is member of the Foundation for the People’s of the South Pacific International (FSPI) network.  This is the oldest secular civil society network operating in the Pacific.  The focus of AFAP’s work, particularly in the Solomon Islands, is building the capacity of local Community Based Organisations (CBOs) and promoting Good Governance, transparency and accountability. In PNG, Samoa and Tuvalu our work has more emphasis on community based resource management and climate change adaptation initiatives.  While in East Timor the work we support focuses more on health issues.

South East Asia

AFAP works mainly in Vietnam and Cambodia.  AFAP has a representative office in Vietnam which was established in 1995.  Our work in the region has always had a Public Health focus which has developed through strong connections with research based institutions such as the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) in Australia and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) in Vietnam.  AFAP Vietnam pioneered community-based biological control programs for Dengue Fever which have been successful at reducing or eliminating Dengue outbreaks in the areas in which we were working.  We are currently implementing a poultry biosecurity program aimed at reducing the impacts of Avian Infulenza with small-scale poultry farmers.

In line with our work in other regions, AFAP’s South East Asia Program also includes rural development activities which encompass a wide range of poverty alleviation initiatives aimed at increasing peoples capacity to reach their own development aspirations.  AFAP supports income generation and food security work, the provision of safe water and sanitation services as well as literacy and education Programs.  In Vietnam our work has a strong Disaster Preparedness and Climate Change adaption component.  While in Cambodia our Program is more focussed on service provision and building the capacity of local CBO’s.  More recently we have been working on initiatives which are aimed at improving community level understanding of National level policies in order to facilitate greater transparency and accountability.  Such initiatives are also aimed at encouraging greater community participation in the development process.

South Asia

The South Asia Program is the smallest AFAP Program. Our work in South Asia has a strong focus on disability as people living with a disability are often the poorest and most vulnerable in the community.  In Bangladesh AFAP is supporting existing service providers to be able to treat conditions such as cleft palate and club-foot deformities.  Early detection and access to treatment along with training for improved clinical practice are a big part of this program.  We are also working with local disability organisations to encourage them to be able to advocate more strongly for the rights of people living with disabilities.
