AFAP’s approach to program and project implementation is to work collaboratively with local partners. Depending on where we are working, our partners may be part of a wider formal network or simply a local representative or NGO with whom we have formed our own links and developed a Memorandum of Understanding.
We believe that this approach is not only cost-effective but ensures that we have access to the local knowledge and expertise, which is so critical to success.
South Pacific
In the South Pacific, AFAP is an independent member of the Foundation of the Peoples of the South Pacific International (FSPI) network whose affiliates have been working in the Pacific since 1965. This network is the oldest, largest, and most experienced secular NGO network in the Pacific.
Today the FSPI network includes NGOs from Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Asia
In 1989 AFAP took its work to Asia, with projects focused initially on Viet Nam. In 1996 we became the first Australian NGO to have its permanent representative office registered by the Vietnamese Government. This work in Viet Nam soon traveled to others regions of Asia.
Currently we have partners in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Viet Nam.
Through our Community Partnerships we are also connected to community groups and local NGOs in Afghanistan, Cambodia, China and the Philippines.

Africa
Our work in Africa began in 1999 when we took the success of the Asian Forest Gardens program to Zimbabwe.
From there, we have expanded and now have partners in Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Through our Community Partnerships we are also connected to community groups and local NGOs in Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda.
