Disaster Preparedness Program
Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu
The South Pacific region is prone to a number of natural hazards such as earthquakes, cyclones, volcanoes and tsunamis. The AusAID-funded Disaster Preparedness Program works closely with the National Disaster Management Office and other agencies to raise knowledge and awareness of natural disaster processes and to improve the preparedness of vulnerable communities.
By using AFAP’s community-based education technology APCEDI, these communities are trained to combine local coping mechanisms with modern technologies to more effectively deal with disasters. This program also works to produce educational materials for villages and schools and provides a vital early warning of approaching disasters.
