The Alola Foundation was established in 2001, by Kirsty Sword Gusmao. The name “Alola” is the nickname of Juliana dos Santos, a 14 year old school girl who was kidnapped, raped and abducted to Indonesia during the violence of September 1999. The Foundation works in direct partnership with a number of local women’s groups and focus in areas such as creation of employment opportunities, promotion of human rights, promotion of community participation in the development process and increasing the status of women in general.

The Foundation of the Peoples of the South Pacific International (FSPI) network
is an independent affiliation of like-minded NGOs who work at the grassroots level in nine Pacific countries. FSPI is the oldest, largest, and most experienced secular civil society network in the Pacific. The FSPI network has a Secretariat based in Fiji. Each affiliate has a representative on the FSPI Board of Management.
AFAP is an independent member of the network and one of FSPI’s two metropolitan partners. The other is Counterpart International in the USA. Both AFAP and Counterpart International offer a range of project services that extend beyond the Pacific.
Community development remains the core business of the network. The community work undertaken by the FSPI affiliates varies from country to country and from sector to sector.

Founded in 1978, PCDF began its operation with a focus on nutrition. The organisation has steadily grown and today its projects encompass health and community awareness, sustainable management of marine and forest resources, small business development, disaster relief, human rights, and good governance. The organisation employs a skilled group of community outreach workers and technical experts.

FSP Kiribati has worked for over 20 years in Kiribati, promoting sustainable community development in active partnership with the Government of Kiribati, local NGOs and church groups, and regional and international partners. Its core strengths are non-formal education and training in the areas of health, water and sanitation, agroforestry, home food production and nutrition, environment, distance education, small business development, and good governance. FSP Kiribati works in urban South Tarawa as well as the rural outer islands in the Gilbert and Line Groups.

Papua New Guinea
The Foundation for People and Community Development has been a member of FSPI since 1992. It has a head office in Port Moresby and a regional office in Madang. FPCD implements projects in the areas of natural resource management and conservation, poverty alleviation, education and health. Its program officers conduct training and awareness raising workshops, and provide technical support to its project activities which involve about 5,000 people across the country.

Samoa
O Le Siosiomaga was founded in 1990 as Samoa’s first environmental NGO. OLSSI specialises in mentoring village communities to sustainably manage their natural resources. The organisation promotes community based participatory approaches to project design and implementation. It also works closely with relevant Samoan Government Ministries as well as the National Council of Churches. OLSSI has access to considerable expertise relating to sustainable ecological development. It is implementing several long-term environmentally sound practical projects with village communities, as well as coordinating various advocacy programs.

Since it was established in 1977, the Solomon Islands Development Trust has been one of the primary proponents of community level development in the Solomon Islands. It has focused on strengthening the quality of village living, in recognition that the village lies at the heart of Melanesian Society and that villagers are resource owners. Its projects include: rural water supply and sanitation; sustainable resource management; disaster awareness and preparation; livelihoods improvement and food security; health (particularly malaria and HIV/AIDS); and restorative justice.

Timor Aid was formed in 1998 and became a member of FSPI in 2000. Timor Aid had a significant, and much praised, involvement in the emergency humanitarian response that followed the events of 1999. It provided relief, reconstruction and development aid. It now engages in long-term development projects mainly in the areas of health, natural resource management, education, capacity building, advancement of women, and income generation. It is implementing projects in Dili and in the districts of Manufahi, Covalima, Viqueque and Oecussi.

The Tonga Trust was established in 1979 and has been continuously involved in women’s development and health issues, including water supply and poverty alleviation. Its strengths include community and environmental development and training. Additional programs have focused on sanitation, agroforestry, pesticide awareness, environmental education and use of community theatre for raising awareness about health, environment and disaster preparedness.
Tuvalu Association of NGOs
As an NGO umbrella organisation, TANGO’s principal concern is encouraging and assisting NGOs in their work to enable human development within Tuvalu. TANGO, which was established in 1986, supports NGOs through the provision of training, services and information, and through encouraging collaboration and communication between NGOs, government and international agencies. A good example of TANGO’s work is its Pacific Skills Link Project which has been running a series of skills development workshops for NGOs and CBOs in the areas of finance, pre-school training, constitution writing, leadership, and project proposal writing. Project staff travel to the outer islands to conduct the training. They also provide one-to-one training and advice to the staff of NGOs in Funafuti.

The Foundation for the Peoples of the South Pacific Vanuatu seeks to improve and promote equal participation and fair treatment of all Vanuatu people, both within FSPV and outside, while conserving the unique cultural identities of Vanuatu. It also seeks to advance the capacities and self-reliance of Vanuatu's communities, especially in rural areas, and develop new ways of doing this. FSPV focuses on sustainable development, particularly in the areas of health, youth, good governance, small business development, and local capacity building. For the implementation of its projects, FSPV works closely with communities and other NGOs, as well as in partnership with national and local governments. It has offices in Port Vila and Luganville and runs a Youth Drop-in Centre in Port Vila.

Established in 1965 as the Foundation for the Peoples of the South Pacific (FSP), FSP changed its name to Counterpart International in 1993 to reflect its increasing role in the former Soviet Union, Southeast Asia and Latin America. Counterpart International works with local, national and regional partners to promote integrated development including socio-economic development, institutional reform, basic health care, environment and natural resources management, food security programs and sustainable tourism initiatives throughout the world.
