Kathmandu Environmental Education Project
Nepal
Established in 1992, the Kathmandu Environmental Education Project has links with the Tracey Taylor Young Mountain Trust in the UK, which was formed following the tragic death of Tracey Taylor Young following a fall on a trek in the Khumba region of Nepal. One of KEEP’s first activities was to open the KEEP Travellers’ Information Centre in Kathmandu. The Centre provides tourists with free information about trekking, helps sensitise them to conservation issues, and encourages the adoption of “minimum impact tourism”. KEEP’s other offices in Pokhara, Salleri and Sermathang provide skills training and runs workshops aimed at strengthening the role of tourism professionals. AFAP has been working with KEEP since 1996, when it formed a partnership to work on programs aimed at assisting the people of the Himalayan region.
