Avian Influenza – Strengthening Local Vet Networks to Prevent AI in Domestic Poultry

Viet Nam

AFAP is working with public and private sector organisations in this innovative project aimed at preventing AI infection in domestic poultry in Hoa Binh province, northern Viet Nam. Hoa Binh borders the Red River delta provinces which have been the hot zone for AI in northern Viet Nam. AFAP is primarily working in Luong Son district, where we are the first NGO to work in AI prevention with small-scale poultry farmers.

The project began in March 2007 and is on track for completion in August 2007. It is working at two levels: firstly, in strengthening the local, district and provincial capacity in poultry biosecurity and in the detection, diagnosis, monitoring and control of AI outbreaks; and secondly, in facilitating coordinated private sector engagement in AI prevention and control strategies

The project is raising awareness at all levels about what AI is, how it is transmitted, how it is prevented and how to detect it. Where AI is detected, the project aims to build capacity to diagnose, monitor and control AI. The project will significantly improve the vet network in Hoa Binh province, providing essential linkages between paravets and government-run district vet stations, improving surveillance and reporting of AI outbreaks. The project will train government staff on how to engage with the private sector effectively, in terms of direct financial contributions, technical expertise, or the provision of laboratory or personal protective equipment.

The project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development, through Kenan Institute Asia.
