AFAP’s development interventions in the education sector are focused largely on informal adult education through planned and targeted training and awareness raising activities with community based organisations, small groups, and individuals who have leadership roles in local communities. Strengthening the capacity of local service delivery agencies is also an essential aspect of AFAP’s informal education activities

Formal training approaches include workshops, short courses and seminars, designed to meet local needs and utilising local resources, including local personnel and local technology. An important strategy of AFAP and its partners is to ensure that training follows a methodical needs analysis and that appropriate ‘follow-up’ training is provided.
Across its Africa projects, AFAP is allocating significant resources to raising awareness about the different responses which communities can take to address the major issues impacting on their lives – behavioural change to reduce the impact of HIV and AIDS, for example. AFAP’s partners are using innovative approaches such as drama and music , as well as more traditional approaches such as films and facilitated discussions in schools and villages.
