Africa - Emergencies
When an emergency in Africa occurs – drought for example – AFAP and its local partners work closely with other agencies and governments at local and national levels to ensure a coordinated response to relief work.
Importantly, we are also incorporating disaster preparedness strategies into our development programs. Like Australia’s bush fires, droughts and periodic floods, natural disasters are part of Africa’s cyclical pattern of events. In southern and eastern Africa, farmers can expect the rains to fail every five or six years. Our approach is to encourage farmers to diversify their incomes through value-adding to the crops they produce and by moving away from their reliance on growing one staple crop, such as maize. The strategy is complex and long term. Interventions range from the use of improved seeds to the establishment of farmer’s associations, which can assist individual farmers gain better prices for their farm produce.
