Devastating diseases, a lack of clean drinking water and poor health facilities plague many of the countries where AFAP works. Often, these problems can be reduced or eliminated through awareness and health programs.
AFAP's health work focuses on the effects of prevalent diseases - including HIV/AIDS, malaria and dengue fever - and includes awareness about prevention and treatment.
This work provides care for the terminally ill and support for the bereaved and orphaned. AFAP has also implemented innovative programs to address the stigma associated with being HIV positive.
Access to clean water and sanitation facilities leads to improved community health. Within its water and sanitation program, AFAP is working with its partners to increase access to clean drinking water by building or repairing wells and installing toilets and other sanitation facilities.
AFAP is also creating general awareness about the importance of hygiene and waste management.

There is a growing trend in the Pacific for youth to use violence – against themselves or others – as a response to stresses in their daily life. In addition, there is an increase in mental health problems such as depression and suicide.
As over 50% of the population of Vanuatu – and many other Pacific nations – is under 25, this represents a major problem for the region.
The program works at community, national and regional levels to increase the level of awareness and destigmatise this issue among parents, teachers, policy makers and traditional leaders.
Advancing Health and Development for Youth (AHEAD)
AHEAD works with communities to raise awareness of adolescent reproductive health, with the aim of reducing sexually transmitted diseases and teenage pregnancy.
AHEAD increases young people’s knowledge about sexual health and reproductive health, strengthens their abilities to make informed decisions, trains peer educators within each community to provide a lasting support network and, where possible, provides a condom distribution network. |
