When links between people and their government degrade, communities lose access to critical social services such as health and law-enforcement. Along with its partners, AFAP has created governance programs to address the threats to peace and sustainable development. The programs aim to increase interaction between national and provincial governments, civil society and chiefs, while aiding communities to identify their priorities and use their assets to generate income and promote self-reliance.

By strengthening the capacity of local groups, communities are able to advance the interests of their constituencies and undertake outreach and advocacy on issues of concern. This increased capacity also enables better community involvement in analysis planning, proposal development, project management, budgeting, book keeping, advocacy and communication.
