Country Overview
Nepal has recently emerged from a period of armed conflict between the Nepalese Government and Maoist Insurgents, who have now been integrated into mainstream politics.
There is widespread poverty in Nepal and severe disparities in living standards in different regions as well as caste, ethnicity and gender divisions.
The main development challenges in Nepal include high levels of illiteracy, low agriculture productivity and a lack of infrastructure in health and education. Food insecurity is a problem in Nepal with UNICEF estimating that 60% of all child mortality is caused by malnutrition. |

AFAP's In-Country Partner:
Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP)
The project promotes the ethics of sustainable tourism to visitors, as well as working with local people to preserve their own environment and culture.
Programs supported by AFAP:
Eco-Tourism Programs
AFAP supported KEEP in establishing the community-based ecotourism initiatives in rural areas of Nepal.
KEEP annually conducts needs-based training as demanded by this industry to strengthen the abilities of tourism professionals. Some of the training and workshops include: language courses, leadership courses, mountain safety training as well as specific presentations on environment, conservation and responsible tourism as conducted by KEEP.
In addition, the Environmental Awareness Program has also been effective in promoting minimum impact trekking and responsible trekking to trekkers and tourism professionals via its information centre in Kathmandu. |
