Programs supported by AFAP:

The Neo Synthesis Research Centre (NSRC)

The primary focus of NSRC is to ecologically restore degraded land using the tools of conservation forestry, analog forestry and organic agriculture.

NSRC conducts national and international training courses for farmers, students and interested parties in ecological farming, certification and watershed management.

NSRC Home Garden Program

This program being conducted by NSRC is for selected farmers to be trained in the agronomy of indigenous medicinal and home consumption plants.

Restoration of the Riparian Zone of the Bolgoda River

The project, funded by Trade Winds Tea and Coffee Pty Ltd, aims to increase the awareness of the community who live alongside the Bolgoda River and its associated wetland.

The project has sought to increase the awareness of young people, specifically school children, and enlist their support in the ecological restoration of the riparian zone of the Bolgoda River.

Rainforest Rescue International (RRI)

RRI aims to promote the conservation of tropical rainforest in a manner that will lead to long-lasting social, economical and environmental benefits to the people of the tropical rainforests. RRI promotes appropriate environmental action on matters including research, education, certification and development of natural products and markets. RRI also works on relief and development projects throughout Sri Lanka.

Past AFAP's projects:

Tsunami Relief Program

The initial relief program was followed by the project to bioremediate drinking water wells that had been contaminated by the salt water and sewage during the tsunami. The well planting program in each garden is helping to improve the quality of the water in the wells. The design of the landscape of each of the gardens includes tree and other perennial crops that provide food, timber, fodder, medicine and a host of multifarious benefits to the beneficiary.

Tsunami Rehabilitation Works

AFAP continued the work with the Brothers of Charity to conduct a Swimming Training Program, a Plant Nursery Training Program, the construction of a community library and youth training facility, the rehabilitation of a public sports ground as well as supplying equipment to schools and hospitals on the east coast of Sri Lanka. This project was funded by Knorr-Bremse Global Care.

Medical Supplies and Services

A shipment was dispatched to the east coast (Kulmanai, Ampara district). Recipients were the Base Hospital and Ashraff Hospital. School equipment was also distributed to a number of schools damaged in the tsunami.
